Basic Training For Sisters

We don't choose our families -- they choose us. Karen, Miriam, and Amira have nothing in common other than they are three middle aged women with no family. They were only children reluctantly raised by single fathers.  Each woman, around the age of eight, literally watched her mother walk out the door once and for all.

Karen Fitzpatrick, coaches basketball at a Catholic grade school in Seattle— the same elementary school she attended. Her best friend, Sister Cecilia is the head coach. Karen has gravitated toward nuns since her mother left. If you can't have a real sister, at least you can still pal around with sisters.

Over a lonely Easter break from coaching, Karen searched the FindYourAncestor.com website and discovered that she had a half sister, Miriam, by her mother. Excited by the possibility, yet scared of rejection, Karen needed a strong push from Sister Cecilia to seek out a relationship with her new found sister.

Miriam Hoffman, as her name would indicate, is Jewish. She was a well known climate activist based in New York City. After her non-profit, SCAN! (Seniors for Climate Action Now!), came under legal scrutiny for the incarceration and near death of a few volunteers, Miriam's life was overcome with legal battles and media-dodging. She now aspires to a lone-wolf life of obscurity.

At Sister Cecilia's insistence, Karen flies out to NYC and hunts down Miriam.  After receiving a firm rejection from Miriam (lone wolves don't need sisters) FindYourAncestor.com informs Karen that there is another sister, Amira Lal, living in Los Angeles. Yep, she's Hindu! Mom sure had a thing for world religions.

Once again, Sister Cecilia takes charge. She sends Karen back to NYC to convince Miriam to help her find Amira. Karen can already hear Miriam's response echoing in her head:  "I didn't ask for one sister, I don't want two!”

Karen finds the down and out, isolated Miriam throwing a solo Passover seder in her dilapidated Brooklyn apartment. After lots of kosher wine and a trip to the pool hall, Karen convinces Miriam to embark on a cross country trip in an electric vehicle to Los Angeles to find Amira.

Ah, Amira, also without family, tried to find a new family with the Satyam Spiritual Center.  The problem is, Satyam is not a family and you can't leave it. Extricating Amira from the dangerous cult speaks to Karen’s familial instincts and Miriam's sense of justice. Can they stop fighting with each other long enough to save Amira? Basic Training for Sisters begins!
